It’s all about sex – or is it?
21st July 2022
I suppose it is all about sex. Even until the end of life the urge to engage in sexual activity can be quite strong. The urge to procreate has been not just strong, but a foundation of life. It’s driven is driven by a few chemicals in the body and unfortunately human beings make a huge deal out of it. For many it is the be all and end all of life. Sometimes through old-age or physical conditions the sex drive is significantly reduced. However generally it’s not so and either natural impulse or desire marks the processes involved. Why wouldn’t it be so as really we are driven by sex for appropriation of our future, plus also recreation interest. It’s a major backdrop to all our life experience and activity and general being.
So why is it such a problem? Why is it such a problem in regard to religion, spirituality, & the lives of nuns or monks, (as an extreme example)? Is it a problem because we have made it so, as we have made it more than it really in importance? Is it because we have made it into something that we are fascinated, obsessed and addicted to by most in general. I hesitate to say, “in general”, but because the statistics are there, it’s throughout the population at a quite dysfunctional level quite possibly.
Now where do we go with this if we want to have spiritual enlightenment, or deep connection with the Divine, or some release from the cycle of birth and death? Or to even make sure we go to heaven?
If you look at the Hindu gods and goddesses, all the main gods are male, and they all have female consorts in mythology. They also have progeny, or quite often they have something similar to harems or polygamy. The great and famous, (males again), always had ready access to many women if they so chose. Yes it has been primarily true that sexual prowess in those terms seemed synergistic with the life styles of men, up to & including the prophets of religious history.
Here I will ignore this historical patriarchy and scripture injunctions, so as to get to the issue of whether the sexual drive is compatible with the spiritual journey, or if it creates some problems. (It does!).
Does sex create problems for everyone also? If it doesn’t, then the outcome of sexual activity creates more progeny, who may well be a problem in terms of the capacity of the earth and numbers of people to feed. This is a major problem. Too many people all generated through sexual activity!
There is another way of seeing things. This is to say that sex is a means and a help in our spiritual journey. This is the view of some who practice Tantric philosophy. Actually it is the view of Tantra that sex is inseparable from the spiritual journey and absolutely necessary for it. So does that mean in this case that you have to have sex with 100% undivided attention, in order to be on track with your meditation?
The truth is probably somewhere in between all of those & any extremes as previously mentioned or hinted at. Sex is actually driven by chemicals as previously mentioned & as a side issue, most of our mental health problems are, (so we are told), just driven by neurochemical/physiological activities. A lot of what we are really concerned about he’s actually very simple – just functions as a result of having a body and brain.
Not a big deal then! Well it’s not a big deal if you have means of moving past the limitations, the patriarchy, the mind/body conundrum, the religious injunctions, the societal norms, and especially any hormonal balance.
This is why I promote the Tantric path of meditating on the Kundalini & associated chakras, using mantras is associated with those centres. You want something that will crossover c& connect the Divine from the mundane, (including sex activity). Just like in the previous writing, connecting strengths/skills to actions. Do you want to connect the natural energy to natural actions leading to natural Realization?
In the Divine there’s no good and bad. Sex is somewhat irrelevant down the track maybe, but it is now extremely relevant and powerful as a tool to enable higher consciousness attainment.
Recognize the energy of the chakras, particular those lower chakras allied to sexual energies. Find out the mantra associated and incorporate them in one’s mental repetitions of mantras. By doing so, there will be generated a connection from the sexual content of the body to the inherent underlying sound of that content, which relates to the subtle energy in the Divine Strata
In the Divine Strata the sexual energy is very potent and strong, because it is about unity. It’s seen that’s in some figurines of the Hindu/Tibetan Buddhist gods and goddesses. You see them in union of sexual congress. There are also images of God/ Goddess is being as one body – half and half. This Divine Union – where is it? It’s where the sex drive between two has been united two to become one. “The two shall become one flesh”, which there has historically been a union of man and wife. Nevertheless the union can be achieved between any two, despite what religious instructions or injunctions say. Simply it is about union that becomes spiritual, because two beings are merged into one. This is also the root cause or origination of this whole business of falling in love, making a connection, finding a life/soul partner.
So don’t underestimate sex in the spiritual journey. It is overarching, over powerful, and everywhere, and we need to be with it and use it and not get into addictions or obsessions, nor crazy relationships because of it. We can be placed in in a Tantric position as a means to greater Divine Union.
I will assume many want some longevity and thus you need look at what the sages and yogis have been doing for millennia. Yes they are dead to the world, as per traditionally described in the literature. They sit in caves cross-legged, don’t indulge in intoxicants, (including tea and coffee). No meat, no friends, or maybe have an acolyte or helper, serving they few needs. Go to India today & you will still find that monastic show is there. Maybe is not as much as in the past, but they are available and findable. Otherwise you go to the ashrams of the top yogis & swamis, who have lots of devotees. Usually they are male gurus, & they may have close female devotees. Some are attractive & quite wealthy, plus you can read all about these gurus, as they are fluent& active in social medias.
I propose that they are not family men, with wives & children usually, and they may not be engaging in sex, although this seems to be a hotly disputed topic in media reports. They have renounced the world apparently, & in order to have the following they must have something to offer. Or some powers. Ones I met in India did have great energy or presence, or both. Therefore I propose that the monastic role has nothing much in modern times to do with celibacy. Orange robes, vegetarianism, or sobriety may be useful, but this is about being in a place where you are on your spiritual journey because you have chosen to move on from the world of Maya. You seek your divine status or to seek the Divine Grace of your Deity. Then sex may be a “take it or leave it issue” Disconnected from “morality” & seen for what it really is. In my mind is way more truthful and honest to get on with the job of Realization without getting bogged down in what is right and what is wrong. What you should do or shouldn’t do is about a lot of rules. What is prohibited what is allowed – it’s all irrelevant. You are one with your consciousness, which is one with the Cosmic Consciousness, which is the Divinity of all. If you want to make it a personal God or higher power so be it. The difference is just one of philosophical approach. It has no reality & hence no need to fight to make other people believe what you believe, or do things this way and only this way. That is fundamentalism and fundamentalism is worse than being a sex addict or a raging alcoholic!
