Understanding the Mantra as Cosmic Sound emanation.
Does sound heal? Is this a Therapeutic way to Self-Realisation?
There are two approaches here. One is based on more recent scientific approaches and the other is millennia of practice. If you do something a long, long time, you get an idea of whether it works or not.
The neuro–chemistry of the brain is intricate and we know that thoughts are interconnected with changes in levels of seratonin, dopamine etc. This in turn is connected to mood and anxiety. A simple view, but also the repetition of certain sounds can affects the brain in many ways producing good benefits. This domain of certain sounds is a platform or foundation for our self-development and spiritual practice. Calm brainwave activity is what we want if we experience anxiety and panic symptoms. In hospital after an emergency visit I was very calm and accepting as I chanted mantras. This was my regime during the cancer surgery that followed, helping me to both accept a longer process of healing, and allowing it to commence immediately. Mantras adjusted my brain to my experience, because of the sound vibrations that did more than just calming.
We can’t see a lot of colour, sounds, and sights that animals can. We just plain don’t know a lot about our local universe when we look at, say, a chair. We don’t know what anything is! Yes the chair is made of vibrating molecules, but what are the vibrating molecule made of?
In your being is at a realised level, you are aligned in a way that allows you to feel all the universal vibrations at a level beyond human sensation. You also experience the practical benefits of immersion in the positive vibration of mantra sound. The enhanced focused from for our Therapeutic Journey is to be turbo-charged by mantra repetition.
When you think negatively, you create a chain of consequences toward negative mental stability. And vice versa, if your emotions to start with are positively leading to health giving thoughts. A subtle vibration can calm the emotions that start the cascade towards catastrophic thinking. You get a cancer diagnosis and also panic emotionally. “I am going to die”. You get reprimanded by your boss. “I will lose my job”. “Then I will be penniless and destitute”, etc. Stop all this now! Use a good mantra that suits you.
Negatively emotion and thinking are intertwined, and will damaging physical and mental health. There is some natural resonance in life that when disturbed is called sickness. Here we do have the option of seeing therapists/healers who use music, dance, art, crystals, and many other techniques. All connected to restoring our natural vibration or resonance. It’s something that can be simply attained through the sound influence of a mantra. It’s not all about chanting. Ancient texts say that silent repetition of a manta is more powerful. How can that be? Science has yet to catch-up!
Now some health professionals, even with a science bias, are turned to healing which involves sound or vibration therapy. Here the subtle qualities of sound are much more than useful just sorting out anxiety and depression, are affecting tumours or organ dysfunction. This connection extends beyond the human experience. (I forgot – cow’s milk is better if they get to listen to music – not punk or heavy metal though). Plants apparently like some classical music, and I heard that that the sound of the violin is best. Maybe some plants prefer the Beatles!
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
Here we go back to pre-science days. The Bible doesn’t spend time discussing mantras, but in Hinduism and Buddhism there are many treatises devoted to the spiritual aspects of mantras. The teaching are that, God and the Word are also in essence the same. Or that the mantra sound expresses the Divine, or that a mantra can be a direct connection and expression of a Deity. In Hinduism each deity, such as Krishna or Shiva, have their selection of mantas used by devotees over thousands of years. Why would humans do this mantra repetition if there was no significant outcome?
The Greek word logos means “meaning.” This is about sounds that are inseparable form intelligence, mystical power, and also not to be forgotten – attainment. Yes people have used mantras to become rich and famous! So, mantras carry information, about a Deity for instance, but also create sanity, if that a desired outcome – or shape a prosperous reality.
Sound is firstly a physical experience. We talk and transmit our communication to others – spoken language. There is a mental “voice” – no not being psychotic! Then there are words you seem to hear in the mind associated with thinking. Probably no one else hears them, but apparently some can “read minds”. They can “hear” your thoughts. It’s telepathy, as the ability to mentally hear what other people are thinking. This is the mind based sound level. Also there is a more subtle domain of visualisation – images seen by what could be the “third eye”. Then there is the transcendental awareness or the perception of a subtle background sound. The sound of “nothing” – of the void or Shunya. It’s a faint drone that comes from the trailing of a mantra sound. I discussed these issues in depth in my previous books, particularly in regard to OM or AUM. You just know, when you experience this sound, and in Self-Realisation. This is then where you become based for life. The Siddha Yogis, (perfected beings), can also produce great powers when they are thus entrenched in their perfect Gyana. (Knowledge of Brahman – the Supreme Bing/State). Their powers can include the ability to awaken others “third eye”, and ensure that a Journey to Self-Realisation is much more doable. (Giving you a short-cut)!
Beyond all is Cosmic Consciousness, where even sound stops. However then we won’t be needing this book!
This is not deep meditation. (Way beyond). This is where the Deity is. It’s both Shiva and Shakti. The male and female form of Deity combined as one. It’s the Brahman of the Vedanta or Veda scriptures.
Our mantras can illumine our life, bring prosperity, or lead us through all levels of experience, via sound vibration, to the state of Nirvana – a silence which contains all sound.
